“The Pink Capri Laugh”
by Susanne Scheppmann

"A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones." (Proverbs 17:22 NIV)

My mother’s multiple sclerosis flared-up. Her mobility decreased. The painful spasms increased. She swallowed her cocktail of medication, but realized she wouldn’t feel well enough to attend the family reunion.

Although not usually prone to depression, she felt a cloud of gloom begin to descend. She grumbled to herself ...[read more]

Perplexing Proverbs: A Bible Study for Women is a ten-week study that applies the wisdom of the Proverbs to ten primary concerns (heart-prints) in a woman’s life.

Issuing a Challenge

They couldn't get to Jesus through the crowd, so they dug through the clay roof above his head. Then they lowered the sick man on his mat, right down in front of Jesus. - Mark 2:4 (NLT)

Last night in my Bible study group, we shared prayer requests. The requests ranged from the health needs of a handicapped 6-month-old baby girl, to a dear friend with cancer, to an uncle battling a form of muscular dystrophy. After we all shared, someone said, “There is so much sickness and health issues in our world.”

It’s true and sometimes it’s overwhelming to know how to pray for friends and family who are dealing with health issues. So, sometimes we just don’t pray at all. But I would like to issue a challenge for the month of March. Jot down on an index card the names of people who are in dire need of prayer for their physical bodies. Then lift their names before the throne of God once a day for the 31 days.

Jot down the names of people who are in dire need of prayer

In addition, touch their lives with a visit, a phone call, or a card. Share with them something humorous—bring a spark of laughter to their lives. Last year, my mom told me a funny story about dealing with her MS. I wrote a devotional titled “The Pink CapriLaugh,” which ran in March for the Proverbs 31 Ministries Devotion. I would like to share it with you. March is multiple sclerosis month, so please share it with anyone who suffers with this insidious affliction.

Will you join me this month in bringing the health needs of friends and family to the feet of Jesus?

Prayer is not eloquence, but earnestness; not the definition of helplessness, but the feeling of I; not figures of speech, but the earnestness of soul — Hannah More.
